Menthol and camphor: the plant science of topical pain relief
Two plant-derived ingredients that FDA recognizes as external analgesics — and why they feel cool on the skin.

Menthol comes from mint plants, and camphor was first taken from the camphor tree. Both are recognized by FDA as active ingredients for external analgesic products sold under the over-the-counter monograph.
Researchers have shown that menthol activates TRPM8, a receptor in skin nerve endings that normally responds to cold. That is why a menthol rub feels cooling even though the skin temperature hasn’t dropped. Camphor also acts on several of these sensory channels.
Whatever rub you choose, read the Drug Facts label: use it only on intact skin, don’t bandage tightly or use a heating pad over it, and keep it away from children — camphor is harmful if swallowed.
