Dry, itchy skin: what colloidal oatmeal does
Finely milled oats have been used on skin for generations. Here is what the science says.

Colloidal oatmeal is whole oat grain milled into a very fine powder that disperses in water and creams. FDA recognizes it as a skin protectant active ingredient.
On the skin, colloidal oatmeal forms a thin protective layer that helps hold moisture in and keep irritants out. Researchers have also studied oat compounds called avenanthramides for their soothing properties.
If your skin is dry and itchy, look for a fragrance-free product, apply it after bathing while skin is still slightly damp, and see a doctor if the condition worsens or lasts more than a week.
