Choosing a cough rub for the family
What to check on the label before you use a camphor, menthol and eucalyptus rub at home.

Rubs made with camphor, menthol and eucalyptus oil have been family staples for generations. A few label checks help you use them safely.
Check the age directions first; some rubs are not for young children. Apply only to the skin as directed — never in or under the nose — and never heat a rub or add it to hot water for steam.
Ask a doctor before use if you have asthma or a smoker’s cough, and stop and ask a doctor if a cough lasts more than 7 days, comes back, or comes with fever, rash or a persistent headache.
